Hana Highway

The Road To Hana

When you’re on Maui doing the road to Hana is a must. It’s one of the most beautiful drives on the islands & it definitely wont disappoint. It’s the number one attraction on Maui so dont miss out.
I like to describe it as a waterfall lovers paradise. From my experience it is great to do after there has been a heavy downpour, it means the waterfalls are flowing & it makes it even more amazing. It is a wet area so be prepared for rain.
Be aware that it is a very windy road & one lane bridges so it does take a lot of time to get there. If you do want to drive it yourself there is a great app called Shaka Guides, if will give you the best information & stories about the destination. It can be downloaded from the App Store for only $12.99.

If you’re not a confidant driver then it is best to book a tour. There are lots of options from private guided jeep tours, smaller & larger group tours.

If you’re staying in the north area of Maui it is best to leave as early as possible as it is a long day & you want to make sure you see as much as you can.

It is a wet area so be prepared for rain. Some of the waterfalls require you to walk to them whereas others are right off the highway. Make sure you have good walking shoes & a jacket.

What to take
  • Cash - Most stalls along the highway only take cash. You wouldn't want to miss out on homemade banana bread & smoothies.
  • Towels - It can get very wet as it rains a lot of that part of the island.
  • Good walking shoes - If you plan on doing some hiking you’ll need decent shoes, they will get dirty because it can get very muddy up there.
  • Full tank of gas - You probably wont need a full tank but its better to be safe than sorry.
  • Your camera with a full battery because it will be used all day.
